This is a simple tool that gives you an approximate number of pages indexed by Google. It doesn't give the actual figure though. According to Google, there are more than 200 million web pages indexed by Google which makes this tool an approximation only.
Type your domain name in the empty box available at the top of the search engine results page and click on 'search. You will be given 2 options to choose from, index count for the entire site or for www.yoursite.com. It is important you input your website exactly as it appears in the SERPs (the toolbar of your browser) so that the tool can determine which pages from your website should be counted.
Even if it's just an approximation, knowing the approximate number of pages indexed will give you an idea of what to expect and how far your competition is. You can improve this by using a more SEO-friendly website structure, building backlinks, etc...
It's not 100% accurate as the Google index checker tool doesn't provide an exact number of pages indexed by google but rather, it gives you an idea of what to expect. For example, if the result is 20000 and your website contains 2000 pages, this tool will give a very good approximation that almost all of your web pages are indexed by Google as approximately 95% of those results are from your domain.
If you're not sure how to do this, there is an even simpler way of finding out how many pages from your website are indexed by Google. Simply visit Google and type the following in the search bar: site:yourdomain.com
This will give you an idea of how many pages are indexed by Google for your website. This option is more reliable than using the Google index checker tool because if your website contains subdomains, this method of checking index count will include all of them in the results.
The Google index checker tool is a useful tool to know the approximate number of pages indexed by Google so it's an important step when doing SEO. Although this doesn't give you 100% accurate information, it gives you an idea what to expect and how far your competition is from google index.
